Say to the father of defects and disgraces:

O you of cramped breast and courtyard,

By what judgment and what understanding,

O claimant to understanding and intelligence,

did you selfishly prefer over us

one more contemptible in worth than dust,

long reckoned a fool, and surpassed

    in his lack of shame?

He has a mouth like a privy; he greets

your face with a 'water-closet' verse from it.

    And God forbid that praise

should come to you except from the privy!

He has, according to his claim, a praise-poem

uglier in my eyes than satire.

Rehashed, left by the hands of the

people with its cloak worn threadbare.

How many a king's house it has seen

on a feast day and amid rejoicing!

He clothes you from it in robes of praise,

    lasting and enduring only briefly.

Yesterday they were worn by men

whom the hands of death had divided among themselves.

And before long he will strip you

of them and cast you into the open.

So rest content with him; for my soul

has been content with coldness from you.

And give me no gifts, for my assault on

your honor is sweeter than bounty.

If he has spared you the need for my praise,

he will not save you from my satire.
