أَدِرpass round كَأسَthe cup المُدامِthe wine عَلَيَّto me صِرفاًunmixed
وَلاand do not تُفسِدspoil كُؤوسَكَyour cups بِالمِزاجِby dilution
Pass me the cup of wine, unmixed,
Pour me a cup of wine pure and unmixed,
And do not spoil your cups by diluting them.
And spoil not your cups with a blend.
فَقَدfor indeed حانَthe time has come الصَبوحُthe morning draught وَحَنَّand has yearned قَلبيmy heart
إِلىfor عَذراءَa virgin تَرقُصُdances فيin الزُجاجِthe glass
For the morning draught's hour has come, and my heart yearns
For the dawn has appeared, and my heart is drawn
For a virgin dancing in the glass.
To a maiden dancing in a jug.
وَدونَكَand here you are فَاِقتَبِسso draw بِالرَطلِby the pound مِنهاfrom it
سَناًa radiance يُغنيكَspares you the need عَنfor ضَوءِthe light السِراجِof the lamp
And here you are—draw from it by the pound
So take a good draught with a flagon from it,
A radiance that leaves you no need of lamplight.
A draught that will spare you lamp-light.
فَهاذاfor this الديكُthe rooster مِنout of طَرَبٍdelight يُناديcalls out
وَيَخطُرُand struts بَينَbetween إِكليلٍa wreath وَتاجِand a crown
For this rooster calls out in delight,
For the cock is crowing deliriously
And struts between a wreath and a crown.
Between a garland and crown.
وَدَعنيand leave me وَالصَلاةَand prayer إِذاwhen تَدانَتdraws near
فَلَيسَfor there is no عَلىon خَرابٍruined land مِنany (emphatic) خَراجِland tax
And spare me prayer when it draws near,
Leave me be when the prayers are called,
For no land tax is due on ruined land.
For a ruin owes no land tax.
