O you whose keenness the sword's edge beheld,

    and whose generosity the clouds beheld—and both learned;

O you whose virtues shine for your visitors,

    seeming stars in the night of calamities;

His character is like a meadow watered by dew,

whose expanses the clouds brightened, the two sharing the task.

Giver of sleek, noble-bred horses, lean of flank,

    and leader of the vast army, a teeming host;

You have two qualities: sternness and generosity,

alternating in governance and gracious giving.

One brings loss to your reviled enemy,

the other brings gain to the hopeful man who seeks you.

Why, then, do you meet with sternness alone

a devotee never once found guilty?

So he spends the night, through your sharpened might, rich

in fear, yet destitute of your kindly favors.

Justice is to exercise both together, so I would have

secured my share of them in both conditions.

And it would ease my hardship whenever

my endurance falters, since I also receive favors.

O you whose praise I have lain awake pondering,

is it right that I should spend the evening before you voicing blame?

For I spend the night weaving, from praise of you, for glory,

robes, while your hand puts no feathers on the arrows.

I never thought, before your long estrangement, that

closeness could become a ladder to separation.

I meet with ill-treatment from you, though I have done no wrong,

and have received your reproach, though I committed no offense.

I pray you be spared from loosening a poet's

tongue one day, or sealing his mouth,

so that, after cheerfulness, he becomes downcast,

    ashamed, and after eloquence, tongue-tied.

If a worthy man falls behind in your time,

alas for my ruin! When will he be advanced?

It is a wonder that, for his merit, one is scorned

who has proved worthy of esteem and honor.

He has always trusted your judgment when assailed

by Time, and declared himself yours when naming his allegiance.

He draws near with an eye whose pupil you are when

it gazes, and shoots as you desire whenever he shoots.

He follows your heeded commands, striving

to fulfill them, and treads the straightest path.

Passionate for whatever wins your pleasure, enslaved by love,

attached to what eludes him with you, deeply enamored.

His praises have strung necklaces around you,

which remain when Time's own lifetime ends.

Should I fear my fate, lest its vicissitudes terrify

my flock with calamity, when your abode is my sanctuary?

Or that hardship should humble me, while your might prevails,

or thirst torment me, while your sea runs high?

Or that a devourer may lawfully eat my flesh this morning,

which yesterday was forbidden to calamities?

Far be it that what your bounty's hand has planted should

    wither, or that what it built should fall to ruin;

or that the draught from your generosity's spring be muddied,

    or the face of your kindness be seen scowling;

or that your gracious pardon—the surest pledge

to a neighbor—should meet destruction at your hands.

So let him taste a first draught of bounty's coolness, for you have

made him swallow, in anger, a cup bitter as colocynth.

And return to your gracious ways, for you have never

accustomed me to find you anything but generous.

And stretch toward me, as my burning thirst drags on,

the hand of giving, whose draught quenches thirst.
