ياO موسِعيyou who lavish on me جَفوَةًcoldness وَصَدّاand rejection
قَدindeed ضاقَhas grown strained بِالبُعدِthrough separation عَنكَfrom you ذَرعيmy endurance
O you who lavish coldness and rejection on me,
O you who have been ungenerous and aloof,
Separation from you has indeed exhausted my endurance.
My patience has been exhausted by separation from you.
أَنتَyou حَبيبٌbeloved لِكُلِّto every نَفسٍsoul
وَكلِّand every حِسٍّsense وَكُلِّand every طَبعِtemperament
You are dear to every soul,
You are a beloved to every soul,
and every sense, and every temperament.
And to every sense and every nature.
قَدindeed فاتَنيhas eluded me مِنكَof you حَظُّthe share of عَينيmy eye
فَلاso do not تَدَعنيforsake me فيin حَظِّthe share of سَمعيmy hearing
My eye has indeed lost its share of you;
I have missed seeing you,
so do not deny my hearing its share.
So do not deprive me of hearing you.
كُنتُI used to إِذاwhenever مَلَّنيgrew weary of me حَبيبٌa beloved
أَنجَدَنيaided me بِالبُكاءِthrough weeping دَمعيmy tears
Whenever a beloved grew weary of me,
Whenever a lover wearied me,
my tears would come to my aid through weeping.
My tears would come to my aid.
مَنwho ليfor me بِهَطّالَةٍwith a copious downpour هَتونٍunceasingly flowing
أَبكيI weep بِهاwith it طاقَتيmy strength وَوُسعيand my capacity
Who will grant me a copious, ceaseless downpour,
Who can lend me a long, whining cry,
with which to weep with all my strength and power
With which to bewail my power and means?
عَلىfor أُناسٍpeople بانواdeparted وَكانواand were
ذُخريmy reserve لِيَوميfor the two days of ضُرّيmy adversity وَنَفعيand my benefit
for people who departed and once were
Over people who were and are
my reserve for days of adversity and prosperity?
My riches on my day of trouble and benefit.
فَلَيتَso, would that شِعريmy knowledge بِأَيِّby what حُكمٍruling
يَاِبنَO son of عَلِيٍّAli وَأَيِّand what شَرعِlaw
Would that I knew by what ruling,
I wonder by what law,
O son of Ali, and by what law,
O son of Ali, and which sacred text,
سَوَّغتَyou sanctioned بَعدَafter الوِصالِunion هَجريforsaking me
عَمداًdeliberately وَبَعدَand after العَطاءِgiving مَنعيdenying me
you sanctioned forsaking me after union,
You made my estrangement deliberate after union
deliberately—and denying me after giving.
And withholding after giving.
فَاِرعَso keep عُهودَthe pledges of الإِخاءِbrotherhood وَاِكرِمand honor
أَخاكَyour brother عَنfrom جَفوَةٍcoldness وَقَطعِand severance
So keep the pledges of brotherhood, and spare
So be true to the pacts of brotherhood and honor
your brother coldness and severance.
Your brother, beyond aloofness and separation.
لاdo not تَنسَforget أَيّامَناour days بِسَلعٍat Salʿ
لِلَّهِto God (expressing admiration) أَيّامُناour days بِسَلعِat Salʿ
Do not forget our days at Salʿ;
Do not forget our days in Sala',
God, what days we had at Salʿ!
By Allah, those days of ours in Sala'.
وَنادِand call out بِاِسميby my name فيin كُلِّevery نادٍassembly
مُستَوحِشاًfeeling lonely ليfor me وَكُلِّand every جَمعِgathering
And call out my name in every assembly,
And call my name in every assembly,
missing me—and in every gathering.
As one who misses me and all company,
وَاِشفِand heal بِلُقياكَthrough meeting you ماwhat بِقَلبيin my heart
لِلشَوقِfrom longing مِنof حَرقَةٍburning anguish وَلَذعِand stinging pain
And heal, through our meeting, what lies in my heart
And cure with seeing you what is in my heart
of burning and stinging caused by longing.
Of burning and agony from yearning.
فَماfor ... not أَراهُI expect him يَزورُto visit قَبريmy grave
مَنone who لَمdid not يَزُرvisit فيin الحَياةِlife رَبعيmy dwelling
For I do not expect him to visit my grave—
I reckon none will visit my grave,
one who never visited my dwelling in life.
Who did not visit my abode in life.
