أَبَنيO sons of أُسامَةَUsama كَمhow long تَدومُwill endure مُواتfavor (word continues)
اةُcompletion of 'favor' الزَمانِtime لَكُمfor you وَكَمand how long تُمليit grants respite
O sons of Usama, how long will the favor endure
My sons Osama, how long will the death
that time shows you, and how long will it grant you respite?
Of time last for you, and how much does it dictate?
لاmay not كانَhave existed دَهرٌan age عِشتُمُyou lived زَمَناًfor a time
فيهِin it وُلاةَmasters العَقدِbinding وَالحَلِّand loosing
May that age never have existed, when you lived for a time
If only you lived in an era,
as masters within it of binding and loosing.
With rulers of integrity and reason.
لاdo not تُنكِرواfind strange يَقظاتِawakenings دَهرِكُمُyour age
كَمhow long يَستَمِرُّit persists بَكُمconcerning you علىin الجَهلِignorance
Do not find your age's awakenings strange:
Do not deny the awakenings of your time,
how long can it persist in ignorance about you?
How long will ignorance persist in you?
سُدتُمyou became masters بِلاwithout حِلمٍforbearance وَلاnor كَرَمٍgenerosity
فيكُمin you وَلاnor أَدَبٍrefinement وَلاnor عَقلِreason
You became masters, with neither forbearance nor generosity
You are without wisdom, generosity,
in you, nor refinement nor reason.
Manners or intellect.
وَفَضَلتُمُand you surpassed أَهلَthe people of الزَمانِthe age بِعُدthrough aggression (word continues)
واكُمcompletion of 'aggression' + 'your' وَلَستُمand you are not مِنamong ذَويpossessors of الفَضلِmerit
And you surpassed the people of your age through
You have outdone the people of this era in
your aggression, though you are not men of merit.
Transgression, yet you are not of noble merit.
فَعَلِمتُso I knew حينَwhen رَأَيتُI saw شَأنَكُمُyour standing
يَعلوit rises بِلاwithout حَسَبٍancestral honor وَلاnor أَصلِpedigree
So I knew, when I saw your standing
When I saw your state,
rise without ancestral honor or pedigree,
Rising without pedigree or origin,
أَنَّthat الزَمانَtime يُعيدُreconsiders فِكرَتَهُits view
فيكُمconcerning you فَيَسلُكُand so it follows مَنهَجَthe path of العَدلِjustice
that time would reconsider its view
I knew time would repeat its cycle
of you, and follow the path of justice:
And take the path of justice.
فَيَخِرُّand so it falls عَنfrom كَثَبٍnearness (here, soon) بِناؤُكُمُyour edifice
وَكَذاكَand likewise ماwhatever يُبنىis built عَلىupon الرَملِsand
then your edifice would soon come crashing down,
So your structure would collapse
and so it is with whatever is built upon sand.
As does all that's built on sand.
