    O Salah al-Din, take

heed of the viper of Iraq.

For he has come to you in the two robes

    of obstinacy and hypocrisy.

Do not ever be deceived by his

    speech, sweet to the taste.

Beneath it lies all you could wish of

    falsehood, lies, and fabrication.

Do not bring him close; he is fit

    only to be sent away.

He is subtle in baseness, so look closely

    into his subtle intentions.

And give him your bitter wrath to drink

in cups filled to the brim,

Before you bear of his harm

    what is beyond endurance.

Do not associate with him, and ask

companions of every sort about him.

For he is a disease in the nostrils,

a choking bone between the collarbones.

The greatest liar of all when he swears

    an oath by divorce,

    White-footed, by unanimous

    judgment and agreement concerning him.

What gathering has he not struck

    with dispersal and separation?

A great serpent: for what he spits

from his mouth there is no healer by incantation.

So may God, against the serpent

with its bowed head, be your protector.

For how much he has left behind in al-Zawra:

    tears spilled,

And wounds too deep for the stitcher

    and the healer;

    And eyes with ulcerated

    lids and inner corners,

They look out for the sight

    of him, without longing.

God drove him to our wealth

    in the worst of ways.

So he took possession of it through deceit,

    ostentation, and hypocrisy,

    And with words more cutting

    than slender white swords.

And now at play with it was

his hand, as in games of chance,

At times by force, and at others

    through mutual consent and agreement.

And he escaped; the wind could not hope

    to overtake him,

Fleeing from it with the swift flight of

    noble A‘waj-bred steeds,

Filling both sides of his bosom with

shame that endures through the ages,

    Seeking with you—may he never

    attain it—a ready market.

So fear God, and do not

    spare the runaway slave.

Grant our lord redress against him,

and send him back in bonds.

Do not loosen for a base man

    his tight noose, ever.

    And seek refuge from faces

    brazen with baseness and treachery,

Lest he be seen beneath shades

of yours, or beneath a portico.

For with one such as you,

the precious wares of hypocrisy do not sell.
