O Jamal al-Din, who has made justice manifest

and revived the noblest moral virtues.

Through you the market of praise has flourished; were it not

for you, it would have become the most stagnant of markets.

Yet I see the gifts that you so generously

bestowed, giving freely to the people of Iraq,

as a blind she-camel's blundering: you do not distinguish between

the ignorant fools and the skilled.

Your two hands apportioned them by luck

and chance, not according to merit.

Thus their manner and extent are unknown,

    like the apportionment of sustenance,

except that sustenance flows by the decree

of the Creator, who knows His creatures fully.
