ياO مَعشَرَcompany of الرُؤَساءِthe leaders وَالأَصحابِand the companions
يا مَعشَرَ الرُؤَساءِ وَالأَصحابِ
وَجَماعَةَand gathering of السُؤّالِthe petitioners وَالطُلّابِand the seekers
وَجَماعَةَ السُؤّالِ وَالطُلّابِ
O company of leaders and companions,
O leaders and companions,
and gathering of petitioners and seekers!
And group of questioners and students,
مَنwhoever كانَis مَولاناour master عَليهِwith him ساخِطاًangry
مَن كانَ مَولانا عَليهِ ساخِطاً
أَوor كانَis طالِبَseeking نائِلٍa gift وَثَوابِand a reward
أَو كانَ طالِبَ نائِلٍ وَثَوابِ
Whoever our master is angry with,
Whoever has anger towards our Master,
or seeks a gift and a reward,
Or is a seeker wishing rewards,
أَوor كانَis صاحِبَpossessor of حاجَةٍa need لاnot تَنبَغيcan be met
أَو كانَ صاحِبَ حاجَةٍ لا تَنبَغي
بِوَسيلَةٍthrough a means مَسدودَةِbarred الأَبوابِthe doors
بِوَسيلَةٍ مَسدودَةِ الأَبوابِ
or has a need that cannot be met
Or has a need that is not appropriate,
through an avenue whose doors are barred,
With blocked ways and doors,
فَليَتَّخِذنيthen let him take me شافِعاًan intercessor فَشَفاعَتيfor my intercession
فَليَتَّخِذني شافِعاً فَشَفاعَتي
فيon حَقِّهِhis behalf مِنamong أَوكَدِthe surest الأَسبابِthe means
في حَقِّهِ مِن أَوكَدِ الأَسبابِ
let him take me as an intercessor, for my intercession
Then let him take me as an intercessor, for my intercession,
on his behalf is among the surest means.
Regarding him, is the firmest of causes,
وَأَناand I الكَفيلُthe guarantor بِأَنَّهاthat it لاnot تَنقَضيcomes to an end
وَأَنا الكَفيلُ بِأَنَّها لا تَنقَضي
أَبَداًever مَدىthroughout الأَيّامِthe days وَالأَحقابِand the ages
أَبَداً مَدى الأَيّامِ وَالأَحقابِ
And I guarantee that it will not come to an end,
And I guarantee that it will never end,
ever, throughout the days and ages.
For ever and ever,
فيin كُلِّevery يَومٍday رُقعَةٌa petition مُسوَدَّةٌblackened with ink
في كُلِّ يَومٍ رُقعَةٌ مُسوَدَّةٌ
وَدَعاand a prayer بِحَمدِwith praise of اللَهِGod غَيرُnot مُجابِanswered
وَدَعا بِحَمدِ اللَهِ غَيرُ مُجابِ
Each day, an ink-blackened petition,
Every day a petition is submitted,
and a prayer—praise be to God—unanswered.
And a call with praise of Allah remains unanswered,
وَكَذاand thus تَكونُare مَواقِعُthe positions الشُعَراءِof the poets مِنwith
وَكَذا تَكونُ مَواقِعُ الشُعَراءِ مِن
رُؤَسائِهِمtheir leaders وَمَواضِعُand the positions الكُتّابِof the scribes
رُؤَسائِهِم وَمَواضِعُ الكُتّابِ
And such is the standing of poets with
And so are the places of poets among,
their leaders, and the standing of scribes.
Their chiefs, and the positions of writers.
