You went far away and denied my eyelids sleep,
And set my eyes' tears flowing freely.

With the caravan, captive to passion?

Without a spear, or seeking protection.

I hope for the kindness of a woman stingy with affection as though her hand were generous,
And fear the attack of a coward as though his heart were hard as iron.

Before you, whenever I roused my resolve for a need,
I attained it only by a spearpoint.

It is more fitting for one like me that his resting place be
The back of a stallion, not the bed of a guarded woman.

The debts owed me, should the beloved delay me.
