لَوif لانَsoftened قَلبُكَyour heart فيin الهَوىlove
لَرَثَيتَyou would have pitied ليfor me مِنbecause of لَوعَةِthe anguish of الحُبِّlove
If your heart had softened in love,
Had your heart been in love,
You would have pitied me for love's anguish.
You would have lamented my torment of passion.
لَكِنbut قَسوتَyou were hard-hearted فَماso not رَثيتَyou pitied لِذيfor one with
كَمَدٍgrief وَلاnor تَحنوyou show tenderness عَلىtoward صَبِّa lovesick lover
But you were hard-hearted, so you showed no pity to one
But you were harsh, so you didn't grieve for one,
In grief, nor do you show tenderness to a lovesick lover.
With yearning, nor were you gentle with a lover.
I maintain ties with him عَلىdespite مَلَلٍweariness
فيهِin him وَيَهجُرُنيand he forsakes me بِلاwithout ذَنبِfault
O one whom I stay close to, despite the weariness
O you, whom I keep reaching out to,
Within him, and who forsakes me through no fault of mine,
While troubled, and you abandon me without fault,
يُذَكيhe stokes ضِرامَthe blaze of الشَوقِlonging فيin كَبِديmy liver
وَيَذودُنيand he keeps me away عَنfrom رَيقِهِhis saliva العَذبِsweet
He stokes the blaze of longing in my liver
Kindling the embers of longing in my liver,
And keeps me from his sweet saliva.
And preventing me from sipping its sweet water.
كُنbe كَيفَhowever شِئتَyou wish فَماso not أَميلُI incline إِلىtoward
عَذلٍcensure وَلاnor أُصغيI listen إِلىto عَتبِreproach
Be as you wish, for I do not yield to
Be however you wish, for I do not incline
Censure, nor do I listen to reproach.
To blaming, nor do I listen to reproach.
هَيهاتَfar from possible! أَطمَعُI hope فيfor السُلُوِّforgetting love وَقَدand already
أَخَذَhas seized الهَوىlove بِمجامِعِby all parts of القَلبِthe heart
How could I hope to forget love—when already
Alas! How could I hope for joy,
Love has seized my whole heart—
When passion has seized the entirety of my heart?
أَوor أَنthat أَنالَI attain عَلىin البِعادِseparation رِضىthe favor of

Or to win, in separation, the favor
Or that I attain, in distance, the pleasure
Of one who was displeased with me when I was near?
Of one who was angered by me in closeness?
