كَتَبتُI wrote إِلَيكَto you وَظَنّيand my belief بِأَنَّthat
مَسعايَmy endeavor عِندَكَwith you لاnot يُخفِقُfails
I wrote to you, believing that
I wrote to you thinking that
My efforts with you would not fail,
my hearing with you does not waver
وَأَنَّand that عُهوديmy vows إِذاwhen أَخلَقَتwore out
عُهودُvows المُحِبّينَthe lovers لاnot تُخلِقُwear out
And that my vows, even when
and that when my covenants are broken
Lovers’ vows wore out, would not wear out.
the covenants of lovers are not broken
فَلَمّاso when جَعَلتَyou made جَوابيthe reply to me السُكوتَsilence
تَبَيَّنَbecame clear ليto me أَنَّنيthat I أَحمَقُa fool
But when you made silence your reply to me,
But when you made my answer silence
It became clear to me that I was a fool.
it became clear to me that I am a fool
