أَرىI see ماءَwater وَردِكُمof your roses قَدalready سَرَتspread
فَأَعدَتand so infected رَوائِحُهُits scents حُرقَتيmy burning grief
I see your rosewater—through it has spread
my burning grief, infecting its scents.
تَغَيَّرَchanged عَنfrom عَهدِهِits former state فيin الذَكاءِfragrant intensity
وَلَمand not تَتَغَيَّرchange لَكُمtoward you نيَّتيmy intention
Its fragrant strength has changed from what it was,
yet my intention toward you has not changed.
وَعَهديand my recollection بِكُمof you قَبلَbefore إِعراضِكُمyour turning away
لَهُit has أَرَجٌan aroma طَيِّبُpleasant النَفحَةِthe waft
As I remember it from you, before you turned away,
it had an aroma with a sweet waft.
تَضوعُare fragrant مَطاويthe folds ثَنائيof my praise بِهِwith it
وَيُزريand casts scorn عَلىupon المِسكِthe musk فيin الثُبنَةِthe gathered garment-fold
The folds of my praise were fragrant with it,
and it put musk in a garment’s fold to shame.
فَأَسقَطتُمُso you dropped لَفظَةَthe word الوَردِrose مِنهُfrom it
وَجِئتُمand you came بِماءٍwith water مِنَfrom البِركَةِthe pool
So you dropped the word “rose” from it,
and brought water from the pool.
فَلَمso not تَبرَbe discharged عِنديin my view لَكُمof yours ذِمَّةٌan obligation
وَقَدand already بَرِأَتhas been discharged مِنكُمُfrom you ذِمَّتيmy obligation
So, in my eyes, your obligation remains undischarged,
while my obligation to you is now discharged.
وَلَمّاand when رَأَيتُI saw دَساتيجَهُits flasks
I read an ill omen مِنهُfrom it عَلىfor مُهجَتيmy life
And when I saw its flasks,
I read in it an ill omen for my life.
لِأَنِّيَbecause I am حَيٌّalive وَهَذاand this الَّذيwhich
بَعَثتُمyou sent بِهِwith it بابَهُits proper place المَيِّتِthe dead
For I am alive, and this, which
you sent, belongs with the dead.
