I lay sleepless at the flash of lightning from Hajir.
I stayed awake longing for the shining lightning,
It flashed like a Yemeni Mashrafi blade.
Gleaming like Yemeni silk embroidered with silver.

Whose amorous tales I cannot forget.

are more deserving of burning in God's fire.
From the clear truth.
وَحَرَّمتُمand you denied عَلَيهِhim الماءَthe water لُؤماًcruelly
وَإِشفاقاًand out of concern إِلىtoward الخَلقِthe creature الدَنِيِّbase
You cruelly denied him water,
You deceived your leader, committing
and out of concern for the base creature.
An outrageous and deceitful crime.
وَأَورَدتُمand you watered جِيادَكُمُyour steeds وَأَظمَيand made thirsty—
تُموهُyou (plural) ... him شُربَكُمyour drinking غَيرَnot الهَنِيِّwholesome
You watered your steeds and made
A leader who would dispense justice in all cases
him thirsty—may your drink be unwholesome!
And assist the weak against the mighty.
وَفيand at صِفّينَSiffin عانَدتُمyou opposed أَباهُhis father
وَأَعرَضتُمand you turned away عَنِfrom الحَقِّthe truth الجَليِّmanifest
At Siffin you opposed his father,
You denied the report of the returning sun,
and turned away from manifest truth.
And suppressed the story of al-Tuyi.
وَخادَعتُمand you deceived إِمامَكُمُyour Imam خِداعاًwith deceit
أَتَيتُمyou committed فيهِin it بِالأَمرِthe deed الفَرِيِّmonstrous
You deceived your Imam with a deception
For your hatred of Ali you condemned him
in which you committed a monstrous deed.
To eternal torment in the pit of hell.
إِماماًan Imam كانَwho was يُنصِفُjudging fairly فيin القَضاياdisputes
وَيَأخُذُand he takes لِلضَعيفِfor the weak مِنَfrom القَوِيِّthe strong
An Imam who judged fairly in disputes
I will send my greetings of peace
and took from the strong on behalf of the weak.
To the Imams, and the choicest presents of my praise—
فَأَنكَرتُمso you denied حَديثَthe account of الشَمسِthe sun رُدَّتwas brought back
لَهُfor him وَطَوَيتُمُand you suppressed خَبَرَthe tale of الطَوِيِّthe well
You denied the account of the sun being brought back
Greetings that I will follow with supplication
for him, and suppressed the tale of the well.
At those tombs, beseeching the Guardians.
فَجوزيتُمso you were requited لِبُغضِكُمُfor your hatred of عَلِيّاًAli
عَذابَwith the torment of الخُلدِeternity فيin الدَرَكِthe depth القَصِيِّfurthest
So for your hatred of Ali you were requited with
And I will clothe the shoulders of time in verses
eternal torment in the furthest depth.
Like a flowing mantle of wisdom.
سَأُهديI shall offer لِلأَئِمَّةِto the Imams مِنfrom سَلاميmy greetings

I shall offer the Imams, from my greetings
Out of goodwill, seeking only
and brightest praises, the purest of gifts:
To displease every hostile dissenter.

a greeting whose first autumn rain I follow
Whose perfume, when diffused, lingers
upon those shrines with succeeding showers.
Like the scent of musk released by the wind.

And with it I clothe the shoulder of the days
Like the breath of the morning breeze flowing by night
in embroidered fabrics like an Abqari mantle,
Stirring the blossoms on the bough.

beautiful ones, by which I seek nothing but
Greetings to Taybah, Bakka, and Karbala;
the discomfiture of every Kharijite aggressor.
To Samarra, Fayd, and Gharra.

When they are spread abroad, a fragrance wafts from them,
To the land of Iraq and Tus,
like the scent of caskets of pungent musk.
Watered from a distant, holy place.

Like the breaths of a breeze passing by night,
May God give life to one who visits those
shaking the tresses of fresh roses.

For Tayba, al-Baqi', and Karbala,
Sending blessings toward them at dawn and dusk.
Samarra, Fayd, and al-Ghari,
They are a treasure for the hereafter, by which one can know

The fortunate from the doomed.

My treasure for the final return is allegiance to a people
through whom the blessed are distinguished from the wretched.

Their knowledge suffices me: I am hostile to
their enemy, and loyal to their ally.
