I have not forgotten her words on the day of farewell, when
I have not forgotten her slender fingers the day we parted
She revealed fingertips we took for caterpillars:
As she quickly moved them in farewell
إِنif كانَwas راعَكَdismayed you حُزنٌgrief يَومَthe day of فُرقَتِناour parting
إِن كانَ راعَكَ حُزنٌ يَومَ فُرقَتِنا

فَلَستَ أَوَّلَ صَبٍّ بِالأَسى ريعا
“If grief dismayed you on the day we parted,
If sadness has struck you the day we separated
Then you are not the first lovesick lover dismayed by sorrow.”
Then you are not the first youth to feel sorrow
