ماليI have no عَلىagainst جَورِthe tyranny of اللَياليthe nights صاحِبٌcompanion
أَدعوهُI call upon him غَيرُother than الصاحِبِal-Sahib اِبنِson of الصاحِبِal-Sahib
I have no companion against the tyranny of the nights
I have no companion to alleviate the tyranny of nights,
to call upon but al-Sahib, son of al-Sahib.
Other than the friend of a friend whom I call but is not my companion.
مَلِكٌa king سَقانيgave me drink مِنfrom نَداهُhis bounty وَرَأيِهِand his counsel
لَمّاwhen اِشتَكَيتُI complained بِصَيِّبٍwith a downpour وَبِصائِبِand with unerring judgment
A king who gave me drink from his bounty and counsel,
A generous king who quenched my thirst with his benevolence and wisdom,
when I complained—with a downpour and unerring judgment.
When I complained of my misery and tribulations.
فَأَعادَso he made again أَيّاميmy days الجُفاةَthe harsh ones حَوانِياًtender
وَأَلانِand softened ليfor me قَلبَthe heart of الزَمانِTime العاتِبِreproachful
So he made my harsh days tender once more,
He brought back to me my unforgiving lost days,
and softened for me the heart of reproachful Time.
And softened for me the heart of time, however blaming.
وَرَأىand he saw الحَوادِثَcalamities وَهيَwhile they تَقرَعُwere striking مَروَتيmy flint
بِشَوائِبٍwith taints مِنof غَدرِهاtheir treachery وَنَوائِبِand misfortunes
And he saw calamities as they struck my flint
He saw the events striking at my dignity,
with taints of their treachery and misfortunes.
With treachery and misfortunes.
فَأَدالَنيso he gave me victory مِنover صَرفِهاtheir reversals وَاِنتاشَنيand rescued me
مِنfrom بَينِbetween أَنيابٍfangs لَهاbelonging to them وَمَخالِبِand claws
So he gave me victory over their reversals and rescued me
He saved me from its twists and revived me,
from between their fangs and claws.
From between its claws and talons.
وَحَناand he was tender عَلَيَّtoward me فَرَدَّso he restored ليto me زَمَنَthe time of الصِباchildhood الthe
ماضيpast وَأَيّامَand the days of الشَبابِyouth الذاهِبِdeparted
And he was tender toward me, restoring to me the time of childhood—
He was affectionate and brought back my past youth,
past—and the days of vanished youth.
And days of departed adolescence.
فَلَأَشكُرَنَّso I shall surely thank نَداهُhis bounty شُكرَthe gratitude of الرَوضَةِthe garden
الغَنّاءِlush with growth مُنهَلَّthe downpour of الغَمامِthe cloud الساكِبِpouring rain
So I shall surely thank his bounty as the garden,
So I will thank his benevolence like a meadow,
lush with growth, thanks the pouring cloud's downpour.
The singing rainfall's fountainhead.
وَلَأَملَأَنَّand I shall surely fill شَرقَthe east of البِلادِthe lands وَغَربَهاand their west
بِشَوارِقٍwith rising lights مِنof مَديحِهِpraise for him وَغَوارِبِand setting lights
And I shall surely fill the lands' east and west
And I will fill the East and West of the world,
with rising and setting lights of praise for him,
With glimmerings of his praise and setting lights.
تُبقيthey leave عَلىthrough الأَيّامِthe days مِنهُof it قِلادَةًa necklace
كَالعِقدِlike a necklace فيon عُنقِthe neck of الفَتاةِthe maiden الكاعِبِwith budding breasts
that leave a necklace of it to endure through the days,
Leaving for the days a necklace from him,
like a necklace on the neck of a maiden with budding breasts.
Like a bead necklace around the neck of a maiden.
