ماnot بِعتُكُمI sold to you مُرخِصاًcheaply ماwhat عَنَّpresented itself مِنof عُمُريmy life
ما بِعتُكُم مُرخِصاً ما عَنَّ مِن عُمُري
إِلّاexcept لِأَنِّيَbecause I مُحتاجٌin need إِلىof الثَمَنِthe payment
إِلّا لِأَنِّيَ مُحتاجٌ إِلى الثَمَنِ
I did not sell you cheaply what my life had to offer,
I did not sell you out of choice, nor willingly
Except because I needed the payment.
But only because I needed the price
لَوif كُنتُI were مُستَغنِياًindependent عَنكُمof you وَليand I had جِدَةٌwealth
لَو كُنتُ مُستَغنِياً عَنكُم وَلي جِدَةٌ
تُعينُنيsustains me ماnot مَلَكتُمyou possessed طائِعاًwillingly رَسَنيmy halter
تُعينُني ما مَلَكتُم طائِعاً رَسَني
Had I been independent of you, with wealth of my own
Had I been self-sufficient, independent of you
To sustain me, you would not have held my halter with my consent.
And had cash to spare, I'd not have sold you so readily
