How long will you defer payment, O cruel one?

Is it not time the creditor was paid?

If union with you cannot be

    won, my longing never departs.

Whoever passes the night with a heart

sound and free of love's anguish—I am the snake-bitten one.

    Why, whenever I try to

forget, does my blameworthy heart hesitate?

And whenever I conceal the secret,

    a telltale tear reveals it.

My eye and my heart, in love,

join forces against me—whom, then, shall I blame?

    O you, whose figure

stands, well-proportioned, as your lover's excuse:

if you are absent from my eyes this

morning, you still dwell within my heart.

O reproacher, upon the back of a swift

she-camel, like a startled male ostrich:

Al-Ban is in Najd; I have

a long-standing longing for its inhabitant.

my departure: have their traces changed?

May rain bless the days of

al-Ghamim, and the one who made al-Ghamim sweet.

And on the dune—if ever you pass

    through Dhu al-Naqa—there is a soft-voiced gazelle.

How strange: it is for him that

my heart longs, though he dwells in its very core.

    How wondrous his radiance, when

the stars have inclined toward the west.

    Dew polishes the garden

after nightfall, and the breeze dapples it.

And the slender shoot of the arak

tree has grown tipsy, with doves as its boon companions.

    The flowers laugh amid its

leafy groves whenever the clouds weep.

It is the home of beneficence; may no

cares ever descend upon its courtyard.

abundant, and all one seeks there is plentiful.

Alight there, and you will win the

farthest reaches of your wishes; I stand surety.

    O you, whose penetrating

judgment has lit the pitch-black night for us:

we have a cool midday resting-place

in his shade, and bounty that reaches all.

    He established generosity; from his

    gifts the clouds have learned.

    يَزهو بِها الشَرَفُ القَديمُ

    Ever achieving new noble deeds,

    in which ancient honor takes pride;

    ثَبتٌ إِذا طاشَ الحَليمُ

    generous when the rain withholds,

    steadfast when the forbearing lose their composure;

    عُهُمُ كَما طابَ الأَرومُ

    from a people with noble

    branches, as noble as their roots;

a people: when the clouds are

angry, the grazier finds contentment with them.

Yours is an honor, O house of

al-Muzaffar, which the stars cannot rival.

    I swear by those resembling

bent bows, worn thin by their brisk trot:

nothing of them remains within their reins

    and nose-rings but skin.

They fold up the wastelands, with longing as their

driver, and the breeze as their guide.

    Racing swiftly, they bend

    beneath the saddles, then straighten.

They were driven onward by the days of

Mecca, the sacred places, and al-Hatim.

    no generous man would be found in the world;

though all men were my opponents.

May a boor be your ransom, one whose

    breast no compassionate heart inhabits.
