    Generosity has died; pour out

    blood, O eye of virtue.

And the generous, O sons of

    hope, have become crumbling bones.

    And you, O speakers of

    verse, give up your striving.

    Do not weary your thoughts,

    nor exhaust your resolve.

Nor hope for a turn of fortune,

while your age has grown decrepit.

    If you can, then seek

    a ladder to the sky.

For the face of the earth, through

    miserliness, has grown grim.

And the water lies in the palm of one

    whose palm complains of thirst,

enamored of gifts bestowed upon it,

    regarding generosity as a loss.

And wealth has now become, for

    the people of bounty, forbidden.

So it sees death, yet never

    sees the generous benefactor.

    أَعقابِهِ التَنَدُّما

    It hates whoever hates

    regret in its wake;

    and it befriends only those

who have never grown used to generosity.

    It becomes enamored of whoever

    becomes enamored of it.

As though this age had sworn

in earnest and taken an oath:

the wealthy shall ever remain miserly,

    and the generous destitute.
