the guarantor and guardian of our livelihoods,

and you who are loftiest among mankind in aspiration
and judgment, and firmest of shoulder.

He is seen as a lion, riding in his saddle,
and as Mount Yadhbul, reclining on his throne.

He lent the Indian sword, from his judgment, its cutting

أَيَحسُنُis it fitting أَنّيthat I أُرىam seen واقِفاًstanding
بِأَبوابِat the doors of غَيرُكُمothers than you سائِلاًbegging
Is it fitting that I should be seen standing
at doors other than yours, begging,
وَمِنand from بَعدِafter مَرعىthe pasture of نَداكَyour bounty الخَصيبِlush
أَنتَجِعُI seek pasture in البَلَدَthe land الماحِلاbarren
and, after the lush pasture of your bounty,
seek pasture in a barren land,
وَأُمسيand I reach evening وَقَدand already خَسِرَتhas failed صَفقَتيmy bargain
وَقَدand already ذَهَبَتhas gone خِدمَتيmy service باطِلاin vain
and reach evening with my bargain ruined,
and my service all gone to waste?
وَإِنand if سَأَلَask الناسُpeople عَنabout قِصَّتيmy story
فَماذاthen what أَكونُshall I be لَهُمto them قائِلاsaying
And if people ask about my story,
what shall I say to them
إِذاwhen قيلَit is said كَيفَhow تَرَكتَyou left الجَوادَthe generous man
وَوافَيتَand you came تَمتَدِحُyou praise الباخِلاthe miser
when they ask, “How did you leave the generous man
and come to praise the miser,
وَمَولاكَwhile your patron أَكرَمُthe noblest of أَهلِthe people of الزَمانِthe age
نَفساًin spirit وَأَوسَعُهُمand the most lavish of them نائِلاًin giving
though your patron is the noblest of his age
in spirit, and the most lavish in giving?”
فَحاشاfar be it, then لِإِنصافِكَfrom your justice الكِسرَوِيّKhosrau-like

Far be it, then, from your Khosrau-like justice
that its scales should become uneven,
فَأُظلَمُso that I am wronged دونَalone among الوَرىhumankind وَالأَنامِand all creatures
بِدَعوَتِكَwith you being called المَلِكَthe king العادِلاjust
so that I alone among mankind and all creatures should be wronged,
while you are called the just king.
نَعَشتَyou raised up رَفيقيmy companion فَغادَرتَهُand so you left him
غَنِيّاًwealthy وَغادَرَتنيand you left me عائِلاneedy
You raised my companion up and left him
wealthy, while you left me destitute.
فَلاfor neither هُوَhe إِنif سُمتَهُyou ask him for الإِرتِفاقَassistance
كانَwould be لِماof what سُمتَهُyou asked him فاعِلاa doer
For he will not, if you ask him for help,
do what you ask of him;
وَلاnor أَناI جَلدٌresilient عَلىin the face of فاقَتيmy poverty
فَأُمسيso that I reach evening لِأَثقالِهاof its burdens حامِلاa bearer
nor am I strong enough in my poverty
to spend the evening bearing its burdens.
وَفيand in الأَمرِthe matter قَدindeed بَقِيَتremains خَصلَةٌone course
تَكونُyou can be بِهاthrough it بَينَناbetween us فاصِلاan arbiter
And in this matter one course remains
by which you can act as arbiter between us:
فَإِمّاso either تُصَيَّرُهُyou make him كاتِباًa scribe
وَإِمّاor else تُصَيّرُنيyou make me غاسِلاa washer
so either make him a scribe,
or make me a washer.
