May God curse a night in Iraq I spent awake,
polishing poems in praise of the ignoble,

وَأُخرِجُand I bring forth مِنfrom نَظمِthe versification of المَعاليlofty virtues فَرائِداrare pearls
and weaving fine fabrics from the embroidery of rhymes,
and drawing rare pearls from verse on lofty virtues.
فَلَمّاthen, when نَضىdrew off عَنّيfrom me الظَلامُthe darkness رِدائَهُits cloak

Then, when darkness drew its cloak off me,
I headed for a stagnant market for praise-poems.
