ياO سادَتيmy masters ماwhat لَكُمُwith you جُزتُمُyou turned aside
عَنfrom نَهجِthe path of إِحسانِكُمُyour generosity اللاحِبِbroad and clear
My masters, why have you turned aside
From the broad path of your generosity?
وَصارَand became فيamong النادِرِthe rare ماwhat كانَwas مَعcounted (word begins here)
دوداًcounted (word ends here) لَكُمfor you ياO قَومُpeople فيamong الراتِبِthe customary
And rare now is what was once counted
Among your customary deeds, O people.
دَعَوتُمyou invited الناسَthe people وَلَمand did not تُهمِلواyou neglect
أَمرَthe concerns of صَديقٍa friend لاno وَلاnor صاحِبِa companion
You invited everyone and did not overlook
Any friend—no, nor any companion.
وَاِزدَحَمَتand thronged فيat البابِthe door أَتباعُكُمyour followers
ماranging بَينَfrom فَرّاشٍa carpet-spreader إِلىto حاجِبِa chamberlain
And your followers thronged the doorway,
From carpet-spreader to chamberlain.
فَلَمso did not تَضِقprove too small يَومَئِذٍthat day دارُكُمyour house
عَنfor أَحَدٍanyone إِلّاexcept عَنِfor الكاتِبِthe writer
Yet that day your house was not too small
For anyone except the writer.

So what an invitation! You almost
Came through it safe from the absent one.
