My lord, you whose hand has planted
favors for me, so what you planted flourished;

and you who became guarantor of my livelihood—ever since
it flowed through your palm, it has never ceased—

مَدحُكَpraise of you يَجريflows فيهِwithin him مَجرىthe course of النَفَسbreath
a prayer from a servant, a scribe, a poet,
in whom praise of you flows like breath.

Indeed, over my bay horse’s condition and what
he requires of me, I am deeply distraught.

The year has grown fertile [probable reading], and all people share
its dews, while he forages for dry fodder.

And he has demanded that I feed him fresh greens,
and the hollowed-out old beast has hoof swelling [uncertain reading].

So give generously to him, and consider that
a horse has added to your servant’s losses.

And do not vie with him, for then neither I
nor he, poor creature, would have any breath.
