Sighs of yearning whose blaze never dies down,

And tears whose streams sustain one another,

And love whose debtor keeps postponing payment,

And longing whose passion never sobers.

Would that the withholding woman's phantom found its way to me,

If her greeting cannot be sent to me.

Fair-skinned, her love has never known constancy

For a day, nor has her pledge kept company with fidelity.

Her mantle is stripped from a pitch-black night,

And her veil drawn back from the breaking dawn.

Her swaying bends my resolve to forget,

And her figure makes my passion excusable.

How many a night we spent startling its darkness

With a delicate bottle and its limpid wine:

Pure wine whose temper we broke by mixing,

To soften its harshness—yet its wildness grew.

And in her mouth, another wine: the seal of its cups

Is musk, but its seal is never broken.

Will my days at Ramah return, now that

Its gazelles have settled on the preserve's sandy tract,

And scattering separation has lodged her in a dwelling

Whose reaches are distant, whose attainment is hard?

I exchanged stolen farewell glances with her, yet unsated remained

A soul whose thirst grows even as it reaches water.

Her tears came cascading down, as though they were

Pearls whose string had snapped on parting day.

And she, when her bower's curtains were raised, seemed

Spring blossoms whose calyxes had opened.

O treacherous ones, who left within my breast,

Through their departure, a fire whose blaze keeps flaring!

You departed: my eyes' streams never dry

For grief, nor is my liver's burning thirst quenched.

    فَعَسى تُمَثِّلُكُم لَها أَحلامُها

    Grant the love-distraught one's eye a little sleep;

Perhaps its dreams will summon you before it.

Rarely does a dream-phantom visit a wounded eye

Whose eyelids know no sleep but the flowing of tears.

Do not destroy through separation a lover's heart:

Parting from its beloved and death are one to it.

The slenderness of waists infected him with wasting

On parting day, and languid eyes with their sickness.

God bless that youth! Gone is the freshness

Of its beauty, and its days have run their course.

And pleasures from a life now past, although

Their liabilities and sins remain with us.

The world passes away, and its misery departs,

As do its bliss, its lawful things and its forbidden.

Except your caliphate, sons of al-Abbas: it

Will stand among mankind until the Resurrection.

It endures through time, linked to the days

Of eternity in its survival and continuance.

You are the lamps of guidance, and your forefather,

Al-Abbas, is Hashim's withers and its hump.

When you assemble to vie in glory, you are

Its practitioners, its scholars, its leading lights.

Illustrious in benefactions, abundant in gifts,

Bright in appearance, handsome of face.

Household of prophethood! Its mantle and its staff

Are yours, along with its pulpit and its sword.

Sons of the uncle of the Chosen One, the guide, and the best

Company whose feet have trodden the earth.

Indeed, by Him who made the caliphate a gift

To you—I swear an oath whose pledges are true—

Your call shall surely encompass the earth,

Despite the enemy, whose noses will be rubbed in dust.

And you shall rule the farthest reaches of Rum from

Close at hand, your decrees enforced by sword-blades.

Its steeds will reach the gulf, with unfurled

    Banners and victorious standards.

There shall be raised, as once above

Fustat, its black banners and its tents.

And al-Mustadi shall surely revive, through his bounty,

The dead remains of generosity, whose bones have crumbled.

And he shall spread justice until there graze

In its shade the desert's gray wolves and its lambs.

Master of favors and gifts, whose great gifts have weighed

    Down kings' necks with bounty.

His generosity aided the lands against drought,

And their barren soil stirred, their year grew fertile.

At his prayer the seasonal rains burst forth, and

Their spouts were unbound, their clouds poured down.

God is too generous for His punishment to fall

Upon a nation whose imam is al-Mustadi:

Its lavish giver, its generous feeder, its fierce lancer,

Its bold champion, its constant faster and night-worshipper.

Through his righteousness the world was set right for us, and in

His days, its days smiled upon us.

The rays of his justice filled its horizons,

And its oppression and darkness cleared away.

    وَيَدُ الخَليفَةِ لا تَطيشُ سِهامُها

    He struck the foes with unerring shots of his might;

The caliph's hand lets none of its arrows stray.

Kings submitted to him after their unruliness,

Willingly, their halters yielding to the lead.

The east of the lands obeyed him, and their west,

Their Hijaz, their Iraq, and their Sham.

Had they not clung to obedience to him, neither

Their creed nor their Islam would have been sound.

What refuge could they find from his command?

Had they attempted it, their judgment would be deemed foolish.

Through him their worship and their rites are fulfilled,

Their marriages, their prayers, and their fasting.

Live safe, Commander of the Faithful, for a realm

Whose herds have known no fright since they were returned to you.

Rule over the days, master of their affairs,

As one obeyed: their reins are in your hands.

A nation will surely thank you: you have granted it

    Blessings its imagination never conceived.

You fortified its heartland with every battalion

Whose young warrior fears no dreadful death.

You are he before whose mighty valor

And onslaught kings' crowns and heads have bowed.

And the Kaaba, the Sacred House—though it rises

High in honor—your people are its proud chiefs and nobles.

    وَإِلَيكَ يُنسَبُ رُكنُها وَمَقامُها

    Your eminence is the pride of its Hijr and Hatim;

To you its Corner and its Station are ascribed.

Yours is a palm whose bounty now gives rest to

The suppliant, while its reprovers tire themselves over its largesse.

If hoarded wealth is prized, it holds it cheap; and if

Its sword-edges gather it, its pens disperse it.

Yours are the battalions and armies, when they march,

Their vast hosts and mighty masses filling the earth.

And the noble steeds of A'waj's line, those that charge

On battle-day, those standing poised and those standing still.

And the earth, its settled lands and wastes, the long ranges

    Of its mountains, its lowlands and its hillocks;

And the swelling seas, with all the vessels upon them,

Raised aloft, as though they were their mountains.

So behold her unveiled—an Arabic ode, sweet in

Meaning, her words a delight to hearts.

Within your sanctuary she was born, and beneath the ample

And far-reaching shade she dwells and stays.

Through loyalty to you she hopes for salvation; for you

On the day of contention she argues and contends.

On you she relies in her present day,

And through you her sins will be forgiven tomorrow.

    وَعَلَيكَ يا خَيرَ الوَرى إِكرامُها

    As long as you possess her, she is her people's noble daughter;

And you, best of mankind, must honor her.

Praises which, should poets ever seek

To fathom what they hold, their minds would fail.

When they race in an arena and she runs toward

A goal, their deficiency and her perfection become clear.

In letters, theirs are the thorns of its qatad

To graze upon; mine are its sa'dan and thumam.

Welcome, then, the days of happiness with a blessing

Whose bounty is pure and whose favors are abundant.

Its freshness wears out the ages, and its years return,

Bringing you the same blessings anew.
