Though the days have worn out the garment of my youth,

    and scattered mirth's once-united company,

and a guest hateful in his coming has visited me,

whom the eyes of oryx and gazelles reject,

yet many a day, its span as short as a thumb,

I rode the saddlebacks of the days.

And many a wine whose seal I broke,

from what a brother of the Magi had selected and chosen.

    تَنفي الهُمومَ وَتُداوي الأَسقام

    Years had passed over it in the wine jars;

it banishes cares and cures ailments.

    ما رِمتُ حَتّى اِبتَعتُها بِما رام

    The wine merchant haggled with me over it and named his price;

I did not leave until I bought it for what he wanted.

It betrayed my passion—and glass is a telltale—

on a night when I defied those who reproached me.

    Sleepers envied me my sleeplessness,

    amid statuesque beauties, like idols,

each a tender maiden with a smiling mouth,

like blossoms revealed by opening calyxes.

And the Romans triumphed over the sons of Ham,

and the cupbearer matched goblet with goblet.

Then it passed away as dreams pass away.

Ah, for the prime of youth, if only it had lasted!

For nights and days gone by!

And how lovely the Tigris on a cloudy day:

its languid breeze and its swelling waters,

    its palaces and hills radiant,

and the clouds clamoring and rumbling.

The north wind drives them as cattle are driven,

as though its downpour and streaming rain

were the bounty of the vizier, lord of generosity and daring:

    open-handed, unyielding, grim-faced, a lavish giver,

the feller of champions [reading uncertain], lionlike and intrepid,

who sheathes white, keen-edged swords in skulls,

the slaughterer of noble steeds, the lavish feeder,

refuge of the outcast and protector of orphans,

reviver of wealth and slayer of destitution.

What a fine resting-place for the needy wayfarer!

He secures the knot of judgment with perfect mastery,

the mastery of an expert, deeply versed in affairs,

aided in all he unbinds and binds.

When cases and judgments become tangled,

and judges stray from the path of right,

he clears up their complexity and obscurity,

through guidance from his Lord and inspiration.

I was moved to speak after long silence

by his abundant gift and favor.

He was gracious at both its outset and completion:

only generous treatment can win a noble man.

O ʿAdud al-Din, strengthener of Islam,

O son of lofty spears, sword edges, and pens,

best of mankind in maternal and paternal uncles:

    they are the heads, and humankind the feet;

and when seekers of bounty stray, they are landmarks,

lions of battle, whose thickets are spears.

    أَكنافُهُم خُضرٌ إِذا اِغبَرَّ العام

    Their nature is to lavish hospitality and food;

their domains are green when the year turns dust-gray.

Each a lion whom a lion begot,

plunging into the terror of calamities, ever charging,

    unsullied by defilement or reproach.

When he mounts the back of a swift, swimming steed,

    he kindles war's fire—what a mighty kindler!

So listen to praise like pearls a stringer has strung,

bringing humiliation to whoever hates your eminence,

from a mind whose current runs in full flood,

to which toil and repose are alike.

And endure through time, as long as feet endure,

lofty in edifice, pouring down showers of favor,

as long as the pilgrim's call is heard in consecration,

and as long as a camel calf's lowing mother grazes.
