أَطَلتُI prolonged وُقوفيmy standing عَلىat بابِكُمyour door
وَماand not كانَwas ليfor me مِنكُمfrom you طائِلُany benefit
I have long stood at your door,
Yet I have gained no benefit from you.
وَأَصبَحَand became بيthrough me مَجدُكُمyour glory حالِياًadorned
وَجيدِيَand my neck مِنof رِفدِكُمyour bounty عاطِلُbare
And through me your glory has become adorned,
While my neck is bare of your bounty.
وَماand not زالَceased يَنصُرُنيsupporting me خاطِريmy inspiration
فَأَحسَنَand so did well وَالحَظُّwhile fortune ليtoward me خاذِلُis unsupportive
And my inspiration has never ceased to aid me;
It has served me well, though fortune fails me.
وَكَمand how many قَدindeed أَتَتنيhave come to me مِنfrom سُخطِكُمyour wrath
صَواعِقُthunderbolts ماno بَعدَهاafter them وابِلُdownpour
And how often your wrath has sent me
Thunderbolts followed by no downpour.
وَليand I have فيكُمabout you مِدَحٌpoems of praise كَالرِياضِlike gardens
باكَرَهاvisited them at dawn العارِضُthe cloud الهاطِلُpouring rain
And I have poems in your praise, like gardens
Visited at dawn by a cloud pouring rain.
تُناقِلُهاcirculate them فيthroughout البِلادِthe lands الرُواةُthe reciters
وَعِندَكُمyet among you ذِكرُهاtheir renown خامِلُis obscure
Reciters circulate them throughout the lands,
Yet among you their renown is dim.
وَمِنand of عَجَبٍwonder أَنthat تُثابَare rewarded الرُواةُthe reciters
عَليهاfor them وَقَدwhile indeed حُرِمَwas deprived القائِلُthe poet
And it is a wonder that the reciters are rewarded
For them, while their poet is left unrewarded.
