And a sweet-mouthed beauty spent the night

in the embrace of a leafy bough.

Its softness passed into her, and she grew tender,

    from the gentle breeze.

    Compact of form and white—

    —fair, and lovely to behold.

She splits open, revealing a red—

—a deep hue, like the scarlet anemone.

She seems to fill the palm,

    a purse of carnelian.

    فَما لَها مِن صَديقِ

    She wrongs, and is wronged in turn;

so she has not a single friend.

We passed her round, and she gave us

her juice, tasting like pure nectar.

Where now is that gathering we sentenced

    to be scattered?
