Do you think the traveler leaving at dawn still keeps the pledge

faithfully, or have the days changed him in my absence?

And does the one withholding my due, for all my longing, know

the anguish I spend my nights enduring in my love for him?

If Lamya delays payment while she is near,

how much likelier that debts go unpaid at a distance.

Ah, would that I knew: shall I ever spend a night

with no prospect of separation from my beloved?

And is there a way—though wishes are but solace—

to a familiar haunt in the sands, so long since I saw it?

And can the nights of youth I once kept company with,

trailing the skirts of idleness, ever return?

And days of union, all of them late afternoons,

and bygone time, all a season at the watering place?

I freely gave my tears to the dwellings, questioning

the traces of love—if only asking them could avail.

And I would have grudged unstringing those necklaces

over a dwelling, but for love of the necklace's wearer.

I did not weep for Hind's ruins, still standing

at Dhu al-Athl; rather, I wept for Hind.

Oh, who will help an eye whose tears pour forth

in bucketfuls upon a cheek furrowed by weeping?

Every eye wrongs the heart with its glance,

and my eye has wronged both my heart and my cheek.

So be gentle with a captive in longing's hand, alone

with his sorrows, O gazelle of the solitary hill.

And visit one whose ribs are aflame, blazing

with yearning for the coolness between your front teeth.

His cure taxes the diviner of Iraq,

though he knows that healing lies in Najd's two hills.

And a phantom vision spent the night comforting my bed,

with a woman of flowing twin tresses and a rosy cheek.

It visited and healed the heart of passion's pain,

and came by night, easing my passion and my yearning.

And it came round my camp to tend and visit me,

and with its counterfeit union helped me against rejection.

I swayed my shoulders for it in longing and desire,

as the caliph swayed his shoulders at praise.

How many favors from the phantom—no, rather, from Ahmad, the

Imam Abu al-Abbas—are gratefully acknowledged by me!

Justice's companion, he alone has become a nation in it,

and in my praise of him, I too am a nation alone.

His kindness and gifts come freely to me,

and no wonder if I spend all my strength in praising him.

An imam who fears God in secret and openly,

and harbors reverence for God in loosing and binding.

His good fortune takes after his forefather al-Mansur—

what a happy fortune, and what a forefather!

    He parts skulls from necks,

and unites the sheep with the tawny lion.

The tips of lofty spears know his prowess

in the mêlée, as do the manes of fine, sleek steeds.

To terrify foes he readies every spear, supple in its

quivering, pliant of shaft, straight of stature,

and every grooved sword, its polish flowing like water,

and a long-bodied, swimming steed, hard as solid stone.

Through dread he cleaves with them before the fight—

how wondrous that a sword should cut while sheathed!

His is the signet of the messenger Ahmad, the seal

of prophethood, inherited with the sword and mantle.

The birds of the caliphate never ceased circling

above him, as thirsty creatures circle the watering place.

Thus rule passed into his management, his resolve untroubled,

    without coercion or toil.

And he rose to ward calamity from it with an arm

strong and mighty in repelling the gravest perils.

He enforces God's prescribed bounds, fearing no one,

with a raised sword, keen of point and severing of edge,

and a cloud of crimson death, brought forth at dawn

by his detachments on a day blackened by battle-dust.

The lions of al-Shara roar through its reaches,

and the blades of India flash along its edges.

Its mighty host blocks the wide expanse,

as though you looked out from it upon the barrier.

In their hands, sword-edges are like gardens,

and upon them, linked mail is like pools.

Winds of his might milked them, and they showered the

enemy with fine rain of straightened, supple spears.

So tell the kings of the earth: submit to his command,

and do not turn, bewildered, from the right course.

And do not harbor disobedience to your imam's command,

in defiance of him, for disobeying him brings ruin.

Obey him, free men and slaves alike, for he is

the successor of one sent to the free and the enslaved.

And despite his pardon, do not think yourselves safe from his striking you

with a calamity: water and fire are both in the fire-stick.

To al-Nasir, son of al-Mustadi, we were borne

by mounts never frightened by hard driving or swift strides,

nor turned loose to seek pasture in abasement,

nor jostling thirsty riding-beasts at a watering place.

Mounts never haltered for bounty, nor would they

desire a gift from anyone but the caliph.

So they alighted in the abode of safety and plenty, grazing

the meadows of bounty and generosity in glory's pasture.

And no dense raincloud, its masses hanging low,

heralding plenty, true to its promise,

from which moisture is driven, its face revealed

    as grim, frowning and dusky,

when the east wind tilts it, swaying heavily,

showing you lightning's smile amid thunder's clamor,

pouring upon the heads of plateaus a streaming flood

of rain, until flat-topped hills meet the hollows—

is more abundant in gifts than the caliph's palm,

or in bounty, when his dwellings teem with delegations.

So lend an ear, Commander of the Faithful, to a freeborn poem,

which, when tracing its lineage, returns to ancient nobility.

A servant chose it for your praise, free-flowing in

improvisation, gifted by nature in jest and earnest.

He goes at evening and morning, out of steadfast allegiance,

and has no aim other than praising you.

He makes your enemies gulp bitter sap, letting them taste it

through words of praise for you sweeter than honeycomb.

You see it lodged like a choking bone between their breastbones,

when they hear it, their breasts seething with foaming rage.

So protect it with a glance from you, that there may shine

upon it the signs of happiness and good fortune.

For fortune's arrow never misses anyone you look upon,

drawing near to him as an auspicious star.

May you ever possess a luxuriant shade over the earth,

far-reaching, and a life extending with time.
