Thus each day a reign is renewed,

And a kingdom endures despite its foes.

And good fortune climbs the Milky Way's back,

And glory stands firm upon the crowns of the stars.

And may seekers of bounty, in every season,

Forever stand at your gates and return.

Congratulations visit you then, while your company

Is united and the company of the envious scattered.

May it return to you with long life, while your life

    Is soft-edged, broad-shaded, and luxuriant.

So may they never cease to bring you praise:

Your favors to us, first bestowed and renewed.

Favors like doves' neck-rings, and blessings

Which necks willingly acknowledge and bear witness to.

    طَريقُ النَدى لِلناسِ فيها مُعَبَّدُ

    Through you Baghdad has become an abode of honor;

The road to bounty there is paved for the people.

It has in you a mountain of forbearance amid calamities,

Unassailable, and a sea foaming with noble deeds.

And you are a refuge for bounty-seekers, a haven

There, a destination and watering place for generosity.

How many a hand has the vizier Ibn al-Muzaffar extended

To its people—white while the age is black!

And but for him, it would have had, against calamity,

No protector, nor any helper there against disaster.

A vizier who approached the world with an experienced eye,

Who sees that earning praise is more fruitful and rewarding.

    For fair remembrance remains immortal

For whoever earns it, while wealth perishes and runs out.

So he spent wealth whose garment time wears out,

And left enduring praise, its remembrance ever renewed.

O ʿAdud al-Din, who brought generosity back to life

And sheltered exiled merit when it was driven out:

Indeed, time, whose reversals were once reviled,

Is praised by every tongue in your day.

I had known the calamities of the nights as ravening beasts,

Tossing people of merit up and down within them.

And can oppressive calamities find any passage

Into a city where the vizier Muhammad dwells?

He remains by night, through his kindness, a Kaaba for the people,

To which they make pilgrimage with hopes and turn.

Hopes pray toward it from every direction,

And this garlanded praise is offered to it.

I swore by God's House the oath of one true to his

    oath, neither exaggerating nor embellishing:

You are surely the most benevolent of people in soul and palm,

And the noblest of them in a new house, and the most glorious.

And your two hands have covered the earth with justice and bounty,

So neither oppression nor poverty is found in the world.

May you be blessed with a year whose lucky star you are,

And may the days never cease to heal and gladden.
