وَباخِلٍand a miser قَدَّمَpresented ليto me شَمعَةًa candle
وَباخِلٍ قَدَّمَ لي شَمعَةً
وَحالُهُand his state أَحرَقُmore fiercely burning مِنthan حالِهاits state
وَحالُهُ أَحرَقُ مِن حالِها
Many a miser presented me with a candle,
And a miser presented me with a candle,
his plight more searing than hers.
Yet he burned more fiercely than it did;
فَماso no جَرَتflowed مِنfrom عَينِهاits eye دَمعَةٌa tear
فَما جَرَت مِن عَينِها دَمعَةٌ
إِلّاexcept وَمِنand from عَينَيهِhis two eyes أَمثالُهاtears like it
إِلّا وَمِن عَينَيهِ أَمثالُها
Not a tear ran from her eye
So no tear flowed from its eye
but many like it flowed from both of his.
Without matching tears flowing from his two eyes.
