And a miser gave generously despite his stinginess,
A miser in his stinginess brought
making a special effort, once in his lifetime.
As he celebrated in his lifetime bitterly
أَهدىgave as a gift إِلَيناto us حَمَلاًa lamb يابِساًdried-out
ماnot رَوِيَتhad its thirst quenched مِنfrom دَمِهِits blood الشَفرَهthe blade
He presented us with a dried-out lamb;
A dried up camel as a gift
its blood did not quench the blade’s thirst.
That has not been moistened by a drinking cup
فَخِلتُهُso I took it to be حينَwhen تَأَمَّلتُهُI examined it
صَبّاًan ardent lover مَشوقاًfilled with longing مِنfrom بَنيthe sons of عُذرَهʿUdhra
So, when I examined it, I took it for
So I found it, as I examined it
an ardent, yearning lover from Banu ʿUdhra.
An alluring young camel from the clan of Udhra
