    مَن مَجدُهُ مُؤَثَّلُ

    My lord Majd al-Din, O

    you whose glory is firmly rooted;

    وَفَضلِهِ يُعَوَّلُ

    O you upon whose kindness

    and bounty one relies;

    أَكرَمَ مَن يُؤَمَّلُ

    O best of those in whom hope is placed, and O

    most generous of those looked to with hope;

    بِالمَكرُماتِ هُطَّلُ

    you whose cloud of generosity

    pours down noble gifts;

    مٌ في الفِخارِ أَوَّلُ

    and you whose house is ancient,

    foremost in glory;

    the minister, son of the minister,

    the noble chief, generous and bountiful,

    يُ القُلَّبِيُّ الحُوَّلُ

    keen-witted and openhanded,

    resourceful and shrewd;

    عَلى النَدى مُعَذَّلُ

    much praised, yet accused of folly,

    rebuked for his generosity;

    خَوفِ الرَدى تَزَلزَلُ

    he advances while feet, from

    fear of death, tremble;

    راً جَذوَةٌ تَشتَعِلُ

    a rain-shower pouring down, and at times

    a live ember blazing;

    he makes his gifts abundant, and not

    every generous man gives abundantly.

    هُ مَربَعٌ وَمَنهَلُ

    For his petitioners, from his bounty come

    a spring pasture and a watering place;

    traits that are wine

    in delicacy, and the north wind.

    خَفيفَةٌ لا تَثقُلُ

    A need has arisen for me,

    a light one, no heavy burden;

    أَمثالِها تَأَوُّلُ

    feasible, with no need

    for interpretation in matters like it;

    nor is there any obstacle to it

    that hinders, except laziness.

    I have no means of reaching it except

    my poems of praise.

    قائِلُها لا يَخجَلُ

    I have put it into an ode

    whose composer need not be ashamed;

    naturally flowing, I am earnest in it

    at times, and also jest.

    Praise has taken an equal share

    with love poetry in its verses.

    مٍ جارُهُ لا يُخذَلُ

    I submitted it to an Imam

    whose neighbor is never forsaken;

    في عَصرِهِ مُؤَمِّلُ

    to an Imam who has never disappointed

    a hopeful petitioner in his time;

    لِكُلِّ راجٍ مَوئِلُ

    to an Imam whose bounty

    is a refuge for every hopeful seeker;

    radiant, from a clan

    to which the sent Prophet belongs.

    His excellence has been proclaimed

    by Ha-Mim and al-Muzzammil.

    مِنهُ إِلَيها يُدخَلُ

    And your counsel is the door

    through which one gains access to it;

    and, by my life, it is barred,

    locked to all but you.

    It is good to entrust kindness

    to him, and fitting.

    كَما يَسيرُ المَثَلُ

    His praise of you has spread

    as a proverb spreads;

    praise just as you like it,

    polished and virile.

    كُلِّ لِسانٍ أَطوَلُ

    His tongue in giving thanks

    is longer than every other tongue;

    as though, in defense of

    a noble man's honor, it were a sword.

    So turn toward him; perhaps

    his barren soil will grow moist.

    For anyone toward whom our lord turns

    is fortunate.

    And assign him a regular allowance of

    bounty, for he understands.

    مِنَ النُهى مُوَكَّلُ

    And restrain Time, whose vicissitudes

    are directed by reason;

    تَقولُهُ وَيَقبَلُ

    for it hears what

    you say, and accepts it.

    walk proudly in the robe of lasting life.

    Bounty is spread for the seeker

    by your carpet, which is kissed,

    as long as the infant suckles, and as long as

    dusk succeeds dawn,

    and a doe murmurs tenderly

    over her fawn.
