قالوا سَفَكتَ دَماً عَزيزاً سَفكُهُ

قالوا سَفَكتَ دَماً عَزيزاً سَفكُهُ

وَيَدُ المَكارِمِ لا يُراقُ لَها دَمُ

وَيَدُ المَكارِمِ لا يُراقُ لَها دَمُ

They said, “You have shed blood too precious to spill;

They said you have shed precious blood in shedding it

and no blood should be shed for the hand of generosity.”

Yet the hand of generosity has no blood shed for it

لا ذَنبَ لي فيما أَتَيتُ لِأَنَّني

لا ذَنبَ لي فيما أَتَيتُ لِأَنَّني

قَبَّلتُ راحَتَهُ وَخَدّي مِخذَمُ

قَبَّلتُ راحَتَهُ وَخَدّي مِخذَمُ

I am not to blame for what I did, for I

I am not to blame for what I have done, because

kissed his palm, and my cheek is a keen blade.

I kissed his palm, while my cheek was bruised
