قالوا الزمانُ غَدا قَصِيراً هل مَضَتْ

قالوا الزمانُ غَدا قَصِيراً هل مَضَتْ

بَرَكاتُه أوْ زادتِ الآلامُ

بَرَكاتُه أوْ زادتِ الآلامُ

They said, “Time has grown short. Have they passed away—

They say time has grown short, have its blessings passed

its blessings—or have the pains increased?”

Or have sorrows increased?

ما ذاك إلاَّ أنه قد فَرَّ مِن

خَوفٍ وقد جارَتْ به الأحْكامُ

خَوفٍ وقد جارَتْ به الأحْكامُ

That is only because it has fled out of

It is only that it has fled from

fear, the decrees having dealt unjustly with it.

Fear, and judgments have oppressed it
