علىon وَجْهthe face منthe one whom أحْبَبْتُI loved أبْصَرْتُI saw نَرْجِساًa narcissus
على وَجْه من أحْبَبْتُ أبْصَرْتُ نَرْجِساً
غداbecame بَاهِتاًawestruck يرْنُوgazing لهat him بعُيونِهِwith its eyes
غدا بَاهِتاً يرْنُو له بعُيونِهِ
On the face of the one I loved, I saw a narcissus;
On the face of the one I loved, I saw a narcissus
It grew awestruck, gazing at him with its eyes.
That will fade tomorrow, though now it blooms under his eyes.
فياso, oh حَبَّذاhow lovely بلدرٌa full moon (likely a typo for بدرٌ) بقلبِيَin my heart نازلٌdwelling
فيا حَبَّذا بلدرٌ بقلبِيَ نازلٌ
كأنَّas though الثُّرَيَّاthe Pleiades عُلِّقتْwere hung فيupon جَبِينِهِhis brow
كأنَّ الثُّرَيَّا عُلِّقتْ في جَبِينِهِ
So how lovely—a full moon dwelling in my heart!
If only in my heart a full moon would descend,
As though the Pleiades were hung upon his brow.
As if Pleiades were suspended on his forehead.
