ياO حابِسَholder of الكأسِthe cup فيin يَدَيْهِhis two hands
يا حابِسَ الكأسِ في يَدَيْهِ
أنْعِمْbe gracious بِرَدٍby returning it لِشارِبِيهَاto its drinkers
أنْعِمْ بِرَدٍ لِشارِبِيهَا
O holder of the cup in his hands,
O cup bearer, holding the cup in your hand
Kindly return it to its drinkers.
Bestow a little to quench my thirst
فَحَبْسُهاfor withholding it فيin يدَيْكyour two hands ظُلْمٌan injustice
فَحَبْسُها في يدَيْك ظُلْمٌ
شَيَّبَmade grey-haired رأسَthe head of الحَبابِthe bubbles فِيهَاin it
شَيَّبَ رأسَ الحَبابِ فِيهَا
For keeping it in your hands is an injustice
Withholding it in your hand is so wrong
That has turned the bubbles’ heads grey within it.
It has turned white the hair of the one craving it
