خَلِيليَّmy two friends مُرَّاpass, you two بِيwith me علىby طَيْبَةَTaybah التيwhich
خَلِيليَّ مُرَّا بِي على طَيْبَةَ التي
بهاin it مَضْجَعُresting place المُختارِthe Chosen One طهTaha المُقَرَّبُthe one brought near
بها مَضْجَعُ المُختارِ طه المُقَرَّبُ
My two friends, pass with me by Taybah, where
My friend, take me past Ta'if where the choicest,
lies the resting place of the Chosen One, Taha, the one brought near.
Muhammad, lies in rest, in virtue ever blest.
يفُوقsurpasses ذَكِيَّsweet-scented المِسْكِthe musk عَرْفُthe fragrance تُرابِهاits soil
يفُوق ذَكِيَّ المِسْكِ عَرْفُ تُرابِها
فمِنso from شَمْسِهhis sun نادأكhe called to you (apparently ناداك) صَلِّsend blessings عَلَىupon النَّبِيthe Prophet
فمِن شَمْسِه نادأك صَلِّ عَلَى النَّبِي
The fragrance of its soil surpasses sweet-scented musk.
The fragrance of its soil all sweet perfumes excels,
So, from his sun, he called to you: “Send blessings upon the Prophet.”
So greet the Prophet from his place where sunlight dwells.
ألَمْhave you not تَرَseen أنِّيthat I كُلَّماwhenever جِئْتُI came طارِقاًas a night visitor
ألَمْ تَرَ أنِّي كُلَّما جِئْتُ طارِقاً
وَجَدْتُI found بهاin it طِيباًfragrance وإنand even if لمnot تَطَيَّبِit perfumed itself
وَجَدْتُ بها طِيباً وإن لم تَطَيَّبِ
Have you not seen that whenever I came as a night visitor,
Do you not see how when to it I come by night
I found fragrance there, even if it had not perfumed itself?
A sweet perfume prevails, though it was not perfumed?
