العرف قرض لمن تذكو مروءته

يهوى الا داء له في حال مقدرته

يهوى الا داء له في حال مقدرته

Kindness is a loan to one whose noble character shines;

Custom is a loan to him who remembers his valor,

he longs to repay it when he has the means.

He wants nothing but a remedy for it, when he is able,

وذاك قيد له أن لم يؤد فلا

وذاك قيد له أن لم يؤد فلا

يفك إلا بشكر أو مكافأته

يفك إلا بشكر أو مكافأته

And it is a fetter upon him: if he does not repay it, it is not

And that is a shackle to him, if he does not pay it back,

undone except through thanks or recompense for it.

It cannot be removed, except with gratitude, or rewarding it.
