In company, I kissed lips, not cups,

And dawn smiles at me through the drinking bowl’s mouth,

Until the sun rose from it, and there vanished

The musk of night beside the coursing stars that hide.

And the river is a sword, its watered pattern wrought by the breeze,

And it has sword-straps made of thickets of fine silk.

Or a maiden’s breast: she has parted her garment’s sides,

Or torn a satin robe for union.

And the birds sing, and the branches dance

In spring’s embroidered brocade of fine silk.

And despite my revelry, my neck is not bare

Of the adornment of exalted, most precious glory.

And languid glances made the east breeze fall ill,

And the lover is clad in agonizing sickness.

Enamored of themselves, they harbor an ailment

From their longing, and the languor of one forsaken and forgotten.

How often, then, have I plucked pleasure’s ripened fruits,

And been heedless of what ill-doing time had wrought.

And driven my hopes away with my chastity’s palm.

Indeed, wishful thinking is the bankrupt’s capital.

For a while, a little of my verse sought to beg,

So I cast it aside like al-Mutalammis’s letter.

And, in longing, I lined my eye with the kohl of sleeplessness,

And gave my sleep to the drowsy eyes.

And I gazed at the rose’s cheek when it reddened with

Shame, while the narcissus’s eyes stood bewildered.
