إنif غابis absent مَنthe one whom أهْوَىI love فليthen I have مُسامِرٌa companion for night-time talk
إن غاب مَن أهْوَى فلي مُسامِرٌ
مِنfrom among الأمانيwishes لمdid not يَغِبْbe absent عنfrom مَجْلِسيmy gathering
مِن الأماني لم يَغِبْ عن مَجْلِسي
If the one I love is absent, I have a companion for night-time talk,
If the one I love is absent, I have
From among wishes, never absent from my gathering.
A companion of hopes that doesn’t leave my gathering
نِعْمَhow excellent الرَّفِيقُthe companion أمَليmy hope إنif لمdoes not يَجُدbestow generously
نِعْمَ الرَّفِيقُ أمَلي إن لم يَجُد
بنَفْعِهwith its benefit فهْوthen it is لَعَمْرِيby my life مُؤْنِسِيmy comforter
بنَفْعِه فهْو لَعَمْرِي مُؤْنِسِي
What a fine companion my hope is! Even if it does not bestow
How great a friend is my hope! If it doesn't find
Its benefit, it is, by my life, my comforter.
Usefulness, it is, by my life, my companion
