مَرَرْتُI passed علىby رَبْعِdwelling of الأحِبَّةِthe loved ones دارِساًruined
ففَاحand wafted بهthrough it عَرْفُfragrance of الحديثِthe tale المُتَمَّمِcompleted
I passed by the loved ones’ dwelling, now in ruins;
And there wafted the fragrance of the tale told in full.
وذكَّرناand reminded us عهدَthe days of الصَّبابةِardent yearning والصِّباand youth
هَدِيلُcooing of حَمْامٍdoves فيon الرُّبَىthe hills مُترنِّمِsinging melodiously
And we were reminded of the days of yearning and youth
By the cooing of doves singing upon the hills.
فقلتُso I said لِخِلِّيto my dear friend عُجْturn aside بناwith us ساعةًa while عسىperhaps
يُحدِّثناspeaks to us رَسْمُtrace of الهوىlove المُتقدِّمِbygone
So I said to my friend, “Turn aside with us awhile; perhaps
The trace of bygone love will speak to us.”
فعُجْنَاso we turned aside لهtoward it عَطْفاًturning علىtoward موضعٍa place بهin it
هَواناour love فكانso it was العَطْفُthe turning عطفَa turn of تَوهُّمِillusion
So we turned aside toward it, turning toward a place where
Our love lay; yet that turning was a turn of illusion.
