مَحَا اللّهُ أقْطاراً من الجُودِ أمْحلَتْ

مَحَا اللّهُ أقْطاراً من الجُودِ أمْحلَتْ

وكم قادرٍ فيها عَن الحَمْدِ عاجِزُ

وكم قادرٍ فيها عَن الحَمْدِ عاجِزُ

May God erase lands that have grown barren of generosity—

May God erase lands grown barren of generosity;

how many a man of means there is, powerless to earn praise,

And how many a capable man there is incapable of earning praise!

وعاقِرَ أرْضٍ ليس يُولَد نَبْتُها

وعاقِرَ أرْضٍ ليس يُولَد نَبْتُها

وكم وَلَدتْ فيها المَنايَا المَفاوِزُ

وكم وَلَدتْ فيها المَنايَا المَفاوِزُ

and how many a sterile tract whose growth is never born;

And barren land whose vegetation is never born;

yet how many deaths the desert wastes there have brought forth!

And how often the wastelands there have given birth to deaths!
