نَثِيرُa scattering of اليَاسَمِينِjasmine منfrom فوقِabove بَدْرٍa full moon
نَثِيرُ اليَاسَمِينِ من فوقِ بَدْرٍ
لِمُحِبِّيهfor his lovers بالخَلاعةِwith wanton abandon باسِطْspreading out
لِمُحِبِّيه بالخَلاعةِ باسِطْ
Jasmine strewn above a full moon,
Scattering jasmine above the full moon
Spreading out in wanton abandon for his lovers.
For those who love it, spreading perfume,
فحَسبْناهso we took him for شَمْعةًa candle أوْقَدُوهاthey lit it
فحَسبْناه شَمْعةً أوْقَدُوها
وعليهاand upon it فَراشُmoths لَيْلٍnight تَساقَطْfell one after another
وعليها فَراشُ لَيْلٍ تَساقَطْ
So we took him for a candle they had lit,
We thought it was a candle they had lit
And upon it the moths of night fell, one by one.
With moths falling around it through the night.
