وإني لسوء الذل لست مطيقا
By my life, I did not show tears out of humiliation;
Never have I wept from being abased,
and I cannot endure the evil of humiliation.
Though I cannot endure abasement.

برد لماء الوجه حين أريقا
But the eye sought to cool my burning thirst
But my eyes wished to cool my anguish
by restoring the face’s water—its honor—when it was spilled.
With the chill of their overflowing tears.
