And a close companion whose radiant face delights the eye,
His gaze is so bright and cheerful,
Whose midwives have proclaimed his good fortune.
His auspiciousness interpreted with good omens.

When a gathering he attends is choked with petitioners,
When an inquirer overwhelms him with questions,
Generosity’s water eases the choking; his petitioner is content.
He appeases with the water of generosity, clarifying his issues.

And if his pens grow thin from their longing
If his pens incline to him out of yearning for him,
For him, his fingertips bend tenderly over them.
His fingers caress them lovingly.

And the sun’s face shines after meeting him,
The face of the sun blossoms when meeting him,
And his late afternoons turn yellow for fear of parting.
And its rays turn pale out of fear of parting from him.
فإنso if صَدَّنِيkept me away عنكfrom you الزمانُtime لحادثٍbecause of a misfortune
فإن صَدَّنِي عنك الزمانُ لحادثٍ
فأيْنthen where منfrom الغَرْقانِthe drowning person فيin البحرِthe sea ساحِلُهْits shore
فأيْن من الغَرْقانِ في البحرِ ساحِلُهْ
So if time keeps me from you through some misfortune,
If fate keeps me from you temporarily,
Then where is the sea’s shore for one drowning in it?
Where is the shore for one drowning in a sea?
فإنكfor you are شمسٌa sun لاnot تُرَىare seen السُّحْبُthe clouds عندهاbeside it
فإنك شمسٌ لا تُرَى السُّحْبُ عندها

فلا تُنْكِرَنْ إن لم يَلُحْ ثَمَّ آفِلُهْ
For you are a sun beside which no clouds are seen;
You're a sun, clouds cannot veil you,
So do not be surprised if its setting star does not appear there.
So do not deny me if your setting hour is unclear.
