أيْرٌ ككلْبِ الدارِ لمَّا جَنَى

أيْرٌ ككلْبِ الدارِ لمَّا جَنَى

وصار في فِعْلِ الْخَنَا ذا شَغَفْ

وصار في فِعْلِ الْخَنَا ذا شَغَفْ

A cock is like the house dog when it has sinned

Like a home's guard dog when it goes astray

and become enamored of lewd acts:

And takes to shameful acts with great delight,

يقُوم للطَّارِي عليه ولا

يقُوم للطَّارِي عليه ولا

يقومُ للإلْفِ الذي قد عَرَفْ

يقومُ للإلْفِ الذي قد عَرَفْ

it rises for the newcomer who approaches it, but does not

It rises up against a passing stranger

rise for the familiar companion it already knows.

But not against a well-known, friendly sight.
