ياO خُلَّبَdeceptive; rainless الْبَرْقِthe lightning الذيwhich
يا خُلَّبَ الْبَرْقِ الذي
كالنَّصْلِlike a blade قدindeed قطَعsevered العَلائِقْthe bonds
كالنَّصْلِ قد قطَع العَلائِقْ
O deceptive lightning, which
O lightning bolt that
like a blade, has severed bonds.
Like a sword blade severed ties
وَافَيْتَyou came to أرْبَدَArbad بالرَّدَىwith death
وَافَيْتَ أرْبَدَ بالرَّدَى
للّهِto God دَرُّكyour excellence أيّwhat a بَارِقْlightning flash
للّهِ دَرُّك أيّ بَارِقْ
You came to Arbad with death.
You reached Arbada with destruction
God bless you—what a lightning flash!
By God, yours is a wondrous flash
ماnot ذاكthat one أوَّلَthe first شائِمٍwatcher
ما ذاك أوَّلَ شائِمٍ
لِلْبَرْقِof the lightning أرْدَتْهُslew him الصَّواعِقْthe thunderbolts
لِلْبَرْقِ أرْدَتْهُ الصَّواعِقْ
He was not the first watcher
That was not the first reviler
of lightning whom thunderbolts slew.
