فيin دَوْلةِthe reign of وَصْلِunion with مُنيَتِيmy heart's desire والهَجْرِand separation
في دَوْلةِ وَصْلِ مُنيَتِي والهَجْرِ
قدindeed حُقَّare due لذاfor this وحَقِّand by the sanctity of رَبِّيmy Lord شُكْرِيmy thanks
قد حُقَّ لذا وحَقِّ رَبِّي شُكْرِي
In the reign of union with my heart's desire and of separation,
In the state of my union and separation
My thanks for this are surely due—by my Lord!
My gratitude is due to the Beloved and my Lord
فيin الوصلِunion حَلَتْgrew sweet حياةُthe life of نَفْسٍa soul وصَفَتْand grew clear
في الوصلِ حَلَتْ حياةُ نَفْسٍ وصَفَتْ
والهجرُand separation بهthrough it يُطِيلُprolongs رَبِّيmy Lord عُمْرِيmy life
والهجرُ به يُطِيلُ رَبِّي عُمْرِي
In union, a soul's life grew sweet and clear;
In union my soul found life and was purified
And through separation, my Lord prolongs my life.
And in separation He lengthens my life, my Lord
