O God, You whom we always and forever implore,

Free the one who has spent a year imprisoned.

O builder of the world upon seven celestial spheres,

And restrainer of its sea from creation, lest they drown,

O Living One, O worshipped One, O Lord of rulers,

O You whose will joins kāf and nūn,

By the honor of the chosen Prophet, the first of Your creation,

And by the honor of Mecca, the Sanctuary, and those who visit,

Free those imprisoned here and there,

By the honor of the four spiritual poles and the Cause of the universe.

If everyone has companions and helpers,

Our own trusted companions have long been absent.

Do not leave us among non-Arabs and Turks,

O you whom He enabled to know hidden things.

We are your flocks, without doubt or misgiving,

And you watch over the servant's hidden intentions.

They stretched a hooked rope for us as a snare,

And those rooted in treachery from the first betrayed us.

We fell like a noble falcon caught in nets.

We ask God to replace misfortune with ease.

O rider aboard a lofty shāmūr [vessel uncertain],

O steamer, press on toward me; the route is mabkhūn [partly unclear].

Set out now from Izmir toward your destination [uncertain reading].

After four days you will reach Beirut, assuredly.

Ride the one adept at crossing the open wastes,

Like a maddened male ostrich when it spots a figure.

By noon you will be near Damascus, your destination.

O Abu Rashida, convey the news skillfully.

Make the rounds of its centers; may God guide you.

Greet those who understand the heart's affliction.

O Abu Hasan, since the day we left you,

By the life of my Lord, Creator of the high and low,

Not a day passes but my heart's thoughts call for you,

And my tears stream down the slopes of my cheeks.

And I hope for a glimpse of your face.

Perhaps bright nights will come, my brother.

O my heart's affliction, if your place lies far away,

How my heart burns when you come to mind!

My brother, beware of the red fezzes.

Even if they give, they remain unchanged after their gifts.

Even if they spread broadcloth for you, it is not as you think [uncertain reading].

Thorns are better than the bedding they spread.

Their foundations were built on disgrace—such was their recompense to you.

Sons of baseness, they do not know their own origins.

May God free us and you from prison,

And we shall swear off service with a thousand oaths and pledges.

I entrusted it to whichever rulers read it:

Those with somewhere to go away from the Turks should go.

And I close my words by invoking that Hashimite Prophet:

May he intercede for us on the day all creatures stand.
