Wisdom prevents my soul’s misguided fancy.

At dawn, from Sinab, rouse your riding-camel;
Pass by Mardeen and Diyarbakır unchanged,
Would that, in her vigor, she were a plunging star!
But avoid Aleppo by night or day.

Toward Biwat, toward Samsun, O messenger, make your way,
Turn from ash-Shahbā and meet the caravan,
And steer toward Suhayl; keep watch when it appears.
Only Homs in the morning awaits you.

Alight in the rest stops, O Heider the Guide,
Toward Kastamonu—would that it, too, were gone!
Drink from the waterbag and slacken its bindings.

Your fleet camel, O my heart's desire, is a piercing star.
Where the gardens of Syria are most beautiful.

And venture to Aleppo by night, when the sun is gone.
Tether your camels and let them graze freely.

Raise a cheer in its midst when you meet the westerners.
Leaving my head turned white.

Crying out their grievance over you.

Money cannot prevent the enemies' gloating,
Demolished my foundations, and turned my head gray.
But losing you gave them cause for glee.

O Abu Hasan, from the day they aligned their ranks
Your loss, my longing, and what befell me
And cast you among traitors, though no guilt had touched you,
Made my withered body collapse.

Nothing but your injustice took away my cunning and strength,
For you; sleep, O its heart's desire, is at war with it.
Nothing but you did my lion cub eyes vigilantly await.

Nothing but seeing you does our soul insistently seek.
In Damascus, Syria, where my kin reside.

Not the loss of money, livelihood, and camel-hair wealth—
My imagination is as if I am among you all,
May it all be your ransom, O reliever of the weary.
Even though your being is absent, O my soul’s purpose.

Wealth is not worth the enemy's gloating;
My eyes shed tears from the supplies of my burning,
True gloating is over losing you—my affliction lies there.
The fire of resentment within me ever flaming.

Us have left me wasted in body and bowed.
Ingesting the poison of estrangement that I drink.

Nothing but your figure does Shibli's eye watch for.
Other than seeing you, though destiny keeps you veiled.

Yet your person, O desire of my soul, is absent.
If God returns to show us wonders, nothing is impossible.

No servant in secret was ever left disappointed.

With separation's poison pouring into my soul's lifeblood.

And delight like a lover reunited with his beloved.

No servant mindful of Him in secret is disappointed.
And release us from the binds of distress.
