Eid has returned, but our Eid is sorrow and injustice.

My tears stream down my cheek on Eid.

For two Eids I have been imprisoned in the land of the Turks.

And on a third Eid we were still in Sinop.

The people rejoiced, and every lovestruck soul was glad—

All except me, Husayn, Hilal, and Dhiyab.

Alas for me, at the folly they have donned!

And they know nothing of us, away in the Turks' land.

My sorrow overflows; a hundred galleons could not carry it.

The burning within me has grayed my hair and side-whiskers.

O God, You whom every sorrowful soul seeks,

O rescuer of the hunted from every pursuer,

You whose mercy all creatures always hope for,

O my Mighty One, vast in bounty and wide of door,

O You whose will joined kaf and nun,

O Living One, lavish giver of great gifts,

O raiser of the heavenly spheres, O spreader of the universe,

O You who hold the world upon four gates,

    بِجاه النَبي المُختار والا ربع قطاب

    Have mercy on the weak, sunk in the depths;

By the honor of the chosen Prophet and the four spiritual poles,

Free us from the prisons after despair,

And make our fortune rise after our star has set,

By the honor of the Sanctuary, the House, and those who visit,

And the Chosen One, sent to humankind with a Book.

After this, O rider of a noble, well-fleshed camel,

From our racing-camel stock, one that outstrips the wheel,

    Pale-coated, Sharari-bred, high-backed and proven,

Like a male ostrich, wary at the sight of a figure.

Toss the riding-saddle onto its back,

And cinch the girth of the lean, wind-swift, skittish mount.

And deck it out in costly silk,

With feather-tufts dangling down all four sides,

And a saddlebag, exquisite in color, with braids and colored wool,

Al-Hawi's handiwork, carrying dates and provisions.

O Abu Rashid, drive it on; beware of slackening.

May you fare well, holding firmly to the road.

    At dawn, set off from Sinop with God's help;

Bring it alongside the wall; do not head for the gate.

Head east, toward the road they speak of.

Keep your right hand always tugging at the rope.

Southward, you must pass through Samsun.

After four days, by the reckoning, you will reach Çorum.

You will come to a sheikh, keen-edged and honed,

    The lion, Ibn Nassar, a winner of noble renown;

A freeborn man, lavish with food when guests arrive,

A servant to his guest, delighting in visiting travelers.

These are my words; weigh the jim and the nun,

From what lay in my heart, a secret rose to my head and spilled out.

    O sheikh, the treacherous are bound to betray;

They feel no shame if their very lineage is called base.

Whoever trusts the scoundrel, O peerless one, is mad.

But my words are blame, madness, and reproach.

A thousand pities for men of rank, left to waste away,

In a land whose inhabitants are hyenas and dogs.

    طاري الكَرَم بيناتهم عيب ينجاب

    Misers—beware—they deceive with their talk;

Among them, even mentioning generosity is a disgrace.

To them, O foremost chief, we have truly become

Like bars, with a hundred guards and a gatekeeper.

When the net catches the noble falcon, it is bitterly wronged.

By treachery they caught us, without feathers or a crow.

Gracious patience! Every affliction has its help.

None but the Lord of the Throne can open a door for us.

And He who numbers creation and the universe will bring us back.

As for our hope in Zayd and Amr, it is a lie.

And if we are lost, others too have been lost at sea.

How many passengers have gone aboard misery's steamer!

By the Chosen One, full moon in darkness, pure in hue,

I close my words and seek forgiveness in this address.
